Hematology / Oncology

The Hematology/Oncology Unit physicians are active in patient care, teaching and research. Physicians provide inpatient care and consultations for hospitalized patients with hematologic and oncologic illness. The Hematology / Oncology unit provides outpatient consultation and follow-up for patients with a wide range of cancer and blood disorders.  The unit also provides supervision of the Hemophilia Center, Hemochromatosis Center and Anticoagulation Therapy Unit at Rochester General Hospital.

Two types of rotations are offered by the unit for senior medical residents:

(1) Hematology Rotation.  Medical residents on the Hematology rotation share the in-patient and out-patient consultations and follow-up visits with fourth year students when they are on the service.  Residents on the hematology rotation have the opportunity to see some of the solid tumor medical oncology patients in the office if they desire that experience.  Residents are actively involved in the team's approach to diagnosis and management of hematologic illness.  Residents learn through case-based discussions, guided reading and scheduled conferences.  The recognition and management of hematologic illness by the primary care clinician is emphasized.  The residents will learn to interpret peripheral blood smears and will learn the approach to common hematologic problems and the indications for specialized hematologic diagnostic testing.  This rotation is available to one or two residents at a time.

(2) Medical Oncology Rotation. Medical residents on the Medical Oncology rotation will spend most of their time seeing inpatient and office consultations with the faculty that care for patients with solid tumors. Residents on the oncology rotation have the opportunity to see some of the Hematology patients in the office if they desire that experience.  Residents are actively involved in the team's approach to diagnosis and management of oncologic illness.  Residents learn through case-based discussions, guided reading and scheduled conferences. This rotation is available to one or two residents at a time.

Faculty members provide medical directorship and patient care for the Lipson Cancer Institute as well as the Mary M Gooley Hemophilia Inc., the designated comprehensive hemophilia center for the region. The Center recieves federal funding for clinical services and research. In addition, an affiliation with Roswell Park Cancer Institute (RPCI) facilitates participation in investigator-initiated, pharmaceutical and cooperative group clinical trials. RPCI Hematology/Medical Oncology fellows rotate with the group and faculty members have adjunct faculty appointments at RPCI.
