Infectious Diseases

The Infectious Disease Unit comprises five full-time faculty active in patient care, teaching and research. The Unit consults on hospitalized patients and outpatients with a wide range of infectious diseases. Most of the approximately one hundred new consultations seen monthly are from the Medical and Surgical services; a few are from the Pediatric and Obstetric services. Usually about thirty patients are being followed at a time. Each member sees outpatient consults and follow-up of discharged inpatients one half- day per week. Drs. Falsey and Walsh research involves the epidemiology, immunology and clinical characteristics of viral infections and vaccine development for respiratory syncytial virus, influenza virus, and other respiratory viral pathogens. The laboratory’s work involves viral culture methods, virus gene cloning, and immunochemistry of viral proteins, including techniques of gel electrophoresis, Western blotting, RT-PCR, immunofluorescence, solid phase immunoassays, and some experimental animal research. Faculty often provide guidance for residents who wish to participate research during their residency.

Medical residents on this rotation share the consultations and follow-up with Infectious Disease fellows and/or fourth-year medical students when they are on the service. Residents learn through case-based teaching, guided independent reading and didactic sessions on Infectious Disease topics, one clinical case conference is held weekly in which residents participate. This rotation is available for up to three residents at a time.

In addition to clinical activities the physicians participate and direct the Infection Prevention Program and the Antibiotic Stewardship Program at the Health System. The latter program is directed by Maryrose Laguio-Vila, MD, along with two Infectious Disease Pharmacists.
