Internal Medicine Residency Program at Unity Hospital
Michael DiSalle, M.D.
Welcome from the Program Director!
Thank you for your interest in Unity Hospital’s Internal Medicine Residency Program! If you seek to begin your Internal Medicine career in a place that fosters your growth as a doctor and as a person, Unity Hospital is the place for you! In 2016, Unity’s Residency Program marks its 75th year of training outstanding people who have gone on to fantastic careers in every conceivable setting, from academic general internal medicine to subspecialty practice to primary care, both here and abroad. The secret to our success is pretty simple: Outstanding Residents training with an energetic and talented Faculty that is focused on Residents’ academic and personal growth, all in the wonderfully supportive family environment that has defined Unity for the last three quarters of a century.
Excellence in medical education, combined with an emphasis on compassion, has always been the centerpiece of our training – first at St. Mary’s Hospital and, since 1998, at Unity Hospital. In the last five years alone, our graduates have gone on to fellowships at major academic medical centers in such fields as Cardiology, Infectious Disease, Gastroenterology, Hematology/Oncology, Endocrinology, Rheumatology, and Pulmonary/Critical Care. Our teaching faculty continues to grow, with recent additions in General Medicine, Cardiology, Neurology, Pulmonary and Critical Care, Palliative Care, Geriatrics, and Endocrinology. Our facilities and services are growing right along with our reputation. In the past ten years, Unity has completed major renovations to our main teaching hospital, our flagship outpatient teaching site, our Resident conference center, our medical library, and the Department of Medicine. These state-of-the-art facilities are complemented by state-of-the art clinical information systems and electronic educational resources, all designed to ensure the ability of our residents to provide 21st century care.
We look forward to hearing from you!
About the Program
At Unity Hospital, we dedicate ourselves to excellence in all aspects of Internal Medicine training. In this era of great advancement in medicine and technology, our society demands that the internist be both an expert in the care of the acutely ill adult and a master of the office setting, implementing the strategies that maintain health and prevent disease. In our residency program, we assure each trainee's competence in:
- Patient care
- Medical knowledge
- Practice-based learning and improvement, including:
- the critical appraisal of the core articles and texts in General Internal Medicine
- quality assessment and improvement skills
- Interpersonal and communication skills
- The delivery of care that is professional and humanistic and recognizes the value of each person
- The optimal utilization of health care resources and information technology
Excellence in medical education, combined with an emphasis on compassion, has always been the centerpiece of our training – first at St. Mary’s Hospital and now through Rochester Regional's Internal Medicine Residency Program at Unity Hospital. For well over 100 years, we have helped shape thousands of dedicated medical professionals who serve our local community and communities around the world. In the last five years alone, our graduates have gone on fellowships at major academic medical centers in such fields as Cardiology, Infectious Disease, Gastroenterology, Hematology/Oncology, Endocrinology, and Pulmonary/Critical Care. Our teaching faculty continues to grow, with recent additions in cardiology, neurology, pulmonary and critical care, and endocrinology. Our facilities and services are growing right along with our reputation. In addition to new Critical Care and Emergency Departments, Unity built a new Department of Medicine Education Center in 2006, which includes a new medical library and conference facilities. This expansion will continue to enhance the skill of our residents by providing state-of-the art clinical technology and training resources within a centralized teaching facility.
