RGH Clinical Laboratory Technology Program - About Us

The Rochester General Hospital Clinical Laboratory Technology Program is a competitive program which has enjoyed a long history of providing excellent graduates who may be found working in all parts of the United States and around the world. Several outstanding features contribute to the Program’s excellence:

The graduate-level lecture series is delivered by the M.D./Ph.D. Division Heads and Pathologists within the Department as well as technical specialists. During General Rotation every Wednesday is lecture day, and during that time all disciplines in the Laboratory are represented and the focus is on medical relevance, clinical correlation, and pathophysiology.

The clinical practicum is taught by highly experienced Clinical Laboratory Technologists, many of whom are graduates of the Program. Many have sought graduate degrees and specialty certifications within their areas.

Excellence of faculty

The graduate-level lecture series is delivered by the M.D./Ph.D. Division Heads and Pathologists within the Department as well as technical specialists. These professionals teach at the University of Rochester School of Medicine as well as in other graduate programs around the Rochester area. The students learn a tremendous amount of clinical information during the lecture series.

Instructional model

The clinical practicum is taught on either a one- technologist to one-student basis or in a small group setting with one or more instructors, using actual clinical material. Each laboratory division has work stations, equipment, and space devoted to student use to eliminate crowding and competition for materials and equipment. It is important to note that students in the Program do not report patient results.

Library facilities

The Werner Medical Library facility at Rochester General is a full-service, comprehensive medical library which offers outstanding support. Our students use the Werner Medical Library extensively.

Clinical Laboratory Technology Program Classroom at Rochester General Hospital

The Classroom facility, used for the 10-week Introduction to Clinical Laboratory Science, the lecture series and small group practicum thereafter, is a well equipped, comfortable, spacious classroom devoted entirely to education of the students. It is used exclusively for the Program and has been completely renovated to allow clinical space for 24 student positions. Photos of the Classroom may be found on the Program’s Facebook page.
