Path To Becoming An LPN

Pathways To Becoming an LPN in NYS

Meet the following basic requirements:

  • At least 17 years old
  • "Be of good moral character"
  • Have completed High School or have your GED
  • Graduate from an acceptable nursing education program

Meet exam requirements

  • Submit application for licensure and fee ($143) to NYSED.

If you are licensed as a nurse in another state:

  • Apply for licensure to NYSED with fee
  • Submit form – Certification of Professional Education (use CGFNS if you are foreign educated)
  • Verify your license through Nursys or submit a Verification of Professional Licensure/ Certification form
  • The ONLY states/ U.S territories NOT participating in nursys are:PA, MI (temporary due to data issues), AL, CA, HI

If you are licensed as a nurse in another country or have received your nursing education in another country:

  • Submit an application for licensure and pay fee
  • Arrange for NYSED to receive your foreign credentials

Pathways to becoming an RN in NYS

  • Meet the following basic requirements:
  • At least 18 years old
  • "Be of good moral character”
  • Have completed High School or have your GED
  • Graduate from an acceptable nursing education program (must meet one of these criteria)
  • Complete NYSED approved child abuse reporting coursework or qualify for an exemption.
  • Complete NYSED approved infection prevention coursework every 4 years.
  • Meet exam requirements

If you are licensed as a nurse in another state:

  • Apply for licensure to NYSED with fee
  • Submit form – Certification of Professional Education
  • Verify your license through Nursys or submit a Verification of Professional Licensure/ Certification form

If you are licensed as a nurse in another country or have received your nursing education in another country:

  • Submit an application for licensure and pay fee
  • Arrange for NYSED to receive your foreign credentials
