Rochester, N.Y. – Rochester Regional Health has announced that Constellation Brands President& CEO Robert Sands, the Sands family foundations and Constellation Brands have made a $20M gift commitment in support of the construction of a new 312,000 square-foot building on the Rochester General Hospital campus. In recognition of this gift, the new building will be named the Sands-Constellation Center for Critical Care.
The transformative gift is the largest in the hospital’s history. It is also the lead gift in Rochester Regional’s newly announced system-wide $300 million comprehensive campaign. The campaign will be chaired by Sands, a current member of the Rochester Regional Health Board. He also served on the Rochester General Hospital System Board from 1999 until 2014; he was Chairman from 2001-2008.
“It is our goal to ensure that every person in our region, from Batavia to the Finger Lakes, has access to quality health care and the resources they need to get and stay well,” said health system President & CEO Eric Bieber, MD. “This generous gift kicks off an ambitious fundraising campaign that will allow us to enhance services and facilities across our entire footprint.”
“Over the past two decades, the Sands family has repeatedly demonstrated its commitment to our patients and this community,” said Rochester Regional Health Board Chairman Robert Dobies. “The creation of the Sands-Constellation Heart Institute, which is one of the state’s leading heart centers, is a clear example of great generosity and vision,” he said. “We are grateful for the Sands’ family, the Sands family foundations and Constellation’s ongoing support and confidence in the health system.”
“The Sands family and Constellation Brands have had a long tradition of giving back to the communities where we live and work,” said Sands. “Health care is one of our focus areas. We are proud to support Rochester Regional Health’s comprehensive campaign,” he said. “It is a privilege to be campaign chairman because the money we raise will make a positive and lasting impact on the people and communities in our own backyard.”
When completed, the 7-story, 312,000-sq. ft. Sands-Constellation Center for Critical Care will house 23 operating rooms, 128 private acuity-adaptable rooms, and 14 special care nursery rooms.
Construction is expected to begin in 2nd quarter 2017, pending New York State Certificate of Need approval. Completion of the construction and renovation project is slated for 3rd quarter, 2021.
“The Rochester region has long benefited from the Sands family, the Sands family foundations and Constellation’s generosity,” Bieber said. “In the three years I have known Rob, his wife, Pamela, and the family, I have seen countless examples of how they live their values – values they learned from their father, Marvin and their mother, Mickey. It is overwhelming to consider the Sands’ extreme generosity of a gift that will enable us to transform how we care for those who need us the most.”
“The impact of this gift and of Rob’s leadership as campaign chair will be felt long into the future, helping generations of residents from across the region to live healthier lives,” said Dobies.
The Sands-Constellation Center for Critical Care will be the largest project of the total campaign. Other elements include the development of the Riedman Health Center (1455 East Ridge Road, Irondequoit) as well as additional modernization investments to other hospitals, practices and services throughout the health system.
