Chef Dominique Crenn from Atelier Crenn and Petit Crenn in San Francisco is headlining this year's SAVOR!, the best food and drink event Rochester has to offer, benefiting Rochester Regional Health's women's health and pediatric services. Crenn was named The World's Best Female Chef by The World's Best 50 Restaurants and was featured in the Netflix hit show Chef's Table. We asked her questions to get to know her a little better, and some of her answers surprised us! Take a look:
What is your go-to comfort food?
It would have to be a grilled cheese sandwich. Comte cheese on brioche bread that has been soaked in butter. It needs to have avocado and tomato compote too, and can be either grilled or pan fried.
If you were not a chef, what else would you do?
Photographer... ballet dancer. Definitely photographer, I'm a very visual person.
What are five things everyone should have in the pantry?
Butter, olive oil, sherry vinegar, sea salt, all things that are simple but must be well made. Also, chocolate for snacking or mochas.
What do you never leave home without?
My dog, Maximus. He even joins me on farmer's market trips.
What is the last book you read and what are you reading now?
I am currently reading Le Petit Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. The last book I read was The Third Plate by Dan Barber.
Who were you most nervous to cook for and what did you prepare?
Juliette Binoche came in to eat at Atelier Crenn in town for the premier of The English Patient. I cooked my Japanese influenced French menu for her. One of the things I observed is as she ate with many important American directors she was the only one at the table who was gracious to the service staff, there was a special way she interacted with them.
What are you watching on Netflix?
I watch many documentaries on Netflix, but I am currently watching The Get Down.
What kind of music do you listen to while cooking?
I listen to whatever the staff has on the speakers when I walk in the door, but for myself I enjoy upbeat jazz, French rap, or any rap music that has a message.
What is your favorite board game?
I love to play Scrabble, perhaps it's the poet in me.
What’s your biggest fear?
I am fearless!
