Rochester, NY — Richard Constantino, MD, has been awarded The Rochester Academy of Medicine’s highest honor, the 2017 Albert David Kaiser Award. Dr. Constantino received the Kaiser Medal for his “distinguished service and contributions to the medical community as a gifted clinician, inspiring teacher and visionary leader.”

Dr. Constantino started his career at Rochester General Hospital in 1978 after receiving his MD from the University of Rochester School of Medicine. In 1981 he opened his internal medicine practice and has remained actively involved in the care of his patients for the past 36 years. In 1981, he was also appointed Chief of Ambulatory Services, Vice President of Rochester General Hospital in 1987, Senior Vice President of Rochester General Hospital in 1991, and President in 1996; the first physician to hold that post in 40 years. Under his leadership, Rochester General Hospital received several awards and recognitions including the “Baby Friendly” designation, Cleanest Hospital in NYS Award, and received Joint Commisson accreditation with commendation.

“I have the best job on earth. I love my patients and have a tremendous relationship with them, and I get to work on community service projects that may influence the health of the entire region,” said Dr. Constantino. “Past recipients of this award include health care leaders in many fields – it’s an absolute honor to join such venerated company.”

Dr. Constantino’s philanthropy and support in the community extends across many organizations and platforms, including Food Link, Mercy Flight, and Catholic Charities of the Finger Lakes. In addition, his energy and passion led to the creation and support of the School to Work Youth Apprentice Program (a collaboration of Rochester General and the Rochester City School District) and an initiative against distracted driving that has been credited for lowering the automobile accident and death rate in Monroe County.

“The Rochester community is very fortunate to benefit from the many years of extraordinary contributions from Dr. Constantino,” said Rochester Regional Health Chief Medical Officer Rob Mayo, MD. “As a physician, Dr. Constantino is recognized for his thoroughness, expert care and high quality patient focus.  His patients know they have an amazing doctor and advocate caring for them. He is a tirelessly optimistic individual whose life is focused on making a difference — which he truly has.”

In recognition of his professional endeavors and community service, Dr. Constantino has received numerous awards, including Nazareth College’s Woerner Kollmorgen Award for community service and civic engagement, the Rochester Business Journal Healthcare Achievement Award, the Rochester Academy of Medicine Distinguished Service Award and the Rochester Ad Council RISE Chairman’s Award. In 2012, the Richard Constantino Patient Access Center opened at Rochester General and in 2016, he was inducted into the St. John Fisher College Science Hall of Fame.
