Rochester, NY – Parents and families whose children are being treated at Rochester General Hospital can now find respite just moments away in the new Pediatric Family Lounge.
Made possible by the generous support of Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) of Rochester, the lounge’s opening was celebrated at a ceremonial ribbon cutting today with the help of Ronald McDonald himself.
The Pediatric Family Lounge is located on the hospital’s third floor, next to the Special Care Nursery. Comfortable and well-lit, the lounge provides families with space to rest and recharge during hospital visits. Children have room to play games or read books. And a small kitchenette offers the opportunity to make a cup of coffee or enjoy a snack.
“I can’t overstate how wonderful it is to be able to offer this to families,” said David Siegel, MD, the Edward H. Townsend Chief of Pediatrics. “Everyone, regardless of why their child is at the hospital, wants to be able to stay close by, and that can mean long hours for those who have driven long distances. Thanks to Ronald McDonald House Charities, we can keep families together longer without them having to sacrifice comfort or incur additional stress.”
The lounge is a stepping stone toward an even more exciting future for the health system’s pediatric patients and their families, says President and CEO Eric Bieber, MD.
“This is the beginning of a long-term partnership between Rochester Regional Health and Ronald McDonald House Charities,” said Bieber. “As we continue to work together, we see the lounge evolving into a more formal program such as a family room or a ‘house within the hospital.’”
RMHC’s Family Room and House within the Hospital programs offer more home-like amenities, such as a full kitchen and bathroom to prepare a family meal or take a shower, as well as a washer and dryer to do some laundry.
Bieber added that the new family space and the new Neonatal Intensive Care Unit that will be located in the future Sands-Constellation Center for Critical Care are part of a plan to broaden the pediatric footprint across the health system. That includes RMHC having a larger programmatic presence in many of Rochester Regional’s hospitals and supporting locations.
“We are incredibly pleased to make this space possible and excited about our developing partnership with Rochester Regional Health,” said Kelly McCormick-Sullivan, president of Ronald McDonald House Charities of Rochester. “Over the next several years, we look forward to making our signature care services available to families receiving care at Rochester General and other Rochester Regional locations.”
