Tom Adler was born and raised in Southern California. He attended college at the University of California, Davis and graduated with honors in Zoology. After a year of graduate study in Pharmacology, he attended the University of California, Irvine California College of Medicine and, in 1977, went on to complete his internship and residency in Medicine at Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center. He elected to specialize in allergy and took his postgraduate training at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, directed by Dr. Gildon Beall.
During his allergy fellowship, Dr. Adler did research on thyroid autoimmunity jointly with Dr. Douglas Heiner and also studied IgG4 immune responses in grass pollen sensitive asthmatics. He also authored a portion of a book on drug allergy, and he has maintained an interest in drug allergy and drug allergy desensitization ever since.
After seven years of private practice in allergy in Medford, Oregon, Tom met Dr. Ann Spataro, of Rochester, NY at a medical conference. When they married, Tom elected to move to Rochester where he has practiced allergy and internal medicine since 1989. He and Ann have two grown daughters. They enjoy cycling, skiing, and hiking together. Tom is also active in the Genesee Valley Nordic Ski Patrol, the Rochester Bicycling Club, and the Adirondack Mountain Club.
In addition to giving talks to local physicians and the public on allergies and asthma, Tom has authored several scientific articles on subjects ranging from drug allergies and grass pollen induced asthma, to anaphylaxis. He is Board Certified in allergy and immunology as well as internal medicine. Tom is a Clinical Instructor in Medicine at the University of Rochester, and has served on the Allergy Advisory Committee of Rochester Independent Practice Association. He is on the medical staff at Rochester General Hospital and Unity Hospital. Tom teamed up with Dr. Scott Valet in 1996, and now confines his practice to allergy, asthma and clinical immunology.
Tom is a member of the “Dermatitis, Drug and Food Allergy” interest section of the American Academy of Asthma, Allergy and Immunology, and is also interested in the management and prevention of asthma. He maintains active memberships in the American College of Physicians, the Monroe County Medical Society, and the Finger Lakes Allergy Society. Tom is also a regular volunteer at a local clinic serving indigent patients in the City of Rochester.
