I’ve had diabetes for many years, and kept it under control until about four years ago. At that point, I got deathly sick. I couldn’t keep food down and I lost a lot of weight. In fact, I lost 40 pounds in a matter of weeks.
I didn’t have any symptoms like dry mouth or weight gain, and my family doctor told me my HbA1c was at 11. She put me on insulin, which actually made it worse. My blood sugar dropped every day usually between 12 and 4 p.m.
To find out why my sugar ran high in the morning and low in the afternoon, I contacted Unity Diabetes & Endocrinology Services. That’s when Dr. Rajamani came into my life. What a blessing he is!
I not only have insulin resistance, but also sensitivity to it. I don’t have Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes – I’m right in the middle. (I didn’t see that one coming!)
In addition to the diabetes, I was also smoking a pack of cigarettes a day … until one day my pulse rate jumped to 250. The Emergency Room doctor told me if I smoked again, they may not be able to bring it down in time. So I quit smoking, too.
Diabetes took a lot out of me. I can control a lot of things in my life, but knowing that no matter how much weight I lose or what I eat, my diabetes will always be here was hard pill to swallow. I was depressed and mad at the same time, but I fought back and now I control my outlook on life. Sure, I still get depressed, but I take every day as it comes. My dream is for every person with diabetes to be free from this disease one day. Dr. Rajamani is my rock – let him be yours!
