Cervical Myelogram

Procedure lasts 30 to 90 minutes.
Take nothing by mouth for four hours prior to exam.

Lumbar Myelogram

Procedure lasts 30 to 90 minutes.
Take nothing by mouth for four hours prior to exam.

Complete Myelogram

Procedure lasts 30 to 90 minutes.
Take nothing by mouth for four hours prior to exam.

Esophagram

Procedure lasts 30 minutes.
Nothing by mouth after midnight the night before the study except prescribed medication taken with small amount of water. Do not chew gum or smoke prior to examination.

Upper GI Series

Procedure lasts 30 minutes.
Nothing by mouth after midnight the night before the study, except prescribed medication taken with a small amount of water. Do not chew gum or smoke prior to examination.

Small Bowel Follow-through

Procedure lasts from 30 minutes to three hours.

Nothing by mouth after midnight the night before the study, except prescribed medication taken with a small amount of water. Do not chew gum or smoke prior to examination.

Barium Enema

Procedure lasts 45 to 60 minutes.
Two days prior to exam, you should drink a minimum of 96 ounces of clear liquids, and you may eat as you normally would this day, unless your doctor tells you not to. The day before the exam, do not eat anything, but do drink 96 oz. of clear liquids (water, juice with no pulp, Jello, bouillon, no milk). Take 10 oz. Magnesium Citrate* at 4 p.m. the day before the examination. Have a clear liquid dinner. Take three Dulcolax (bisacodyl) tablets* by mouth at 10 p.m. the night before the exam. Insert one Dulcolax (bisacodyl) rectal suppository* at 7 a.m. the day of the exam. You may continue to drink clear fluids.
