Rochester General Social Work

It is not uncommon for illness and hospitalization to involve other factors, such as drug and alcohol problems, domestic abuse, child abuse, bereavement, or other issues due to illness. Your social worker can offer counseling and informed advice to you and your loved ones for these and other issues.

The Rochester General Social Work Services team can provide a convenient link to community resources and services that can help you cope with the medical, financial and emotional issues you may face during or after your hospital stay. These might include securing coverage for prescription medications; accessing appropriate food, clothing or transportation; or finding help with efforts to stop smoking or other medically advised challenges.

Sometimes, patients and families face difficult or emotionally charged tasks during a hospital stay, such as completing advanced directives paperwork. In those instances, your social worker can be an understanding advocate while guiding you through the process.

Your social worker can also provide crisis intervention to help alleviate awkward or uncomfortable situations among family members, and help you and your loved ones arrive at positive solutions that will assist with your care and well-being.

Special Services

Depending on your needs, your social worker can help you find emergency lodging for out-of-town family members, and provide access to interpreters for patients or family members who may be deaf / hard-of-hearing or non-English speaking.

Contacting Social Work

One or more social workers are assigned to each unit in the hospital, to offer support and counsel to patients and provide information about community resources that can further assist you and your family.

If you would like to talk with your social worker at any time during your hospital stay, please ask a nurse, doctor or patient care technician, who will contact your social worker for you.
