At Lipson Cancer Institute, we understand that caring for cancer goes beyond just the treatment – there are physical, emotional, and financial aspects that come with it. That’s why we see deeper than a patient’s diagnosis and offer a range of specialized programs that help treat the mind, body, and soul before, during, and after cancer.

Diet & Nutrition
Nutrition plays a vital role in cancer treatment and recovery. Patients with good nutrition feel better — and have better outcomes. That’s why we have dietitians with expertise in cancer care to help you manage the effects of cancer and treatment. Your dietitian can help you:
- Maintain your weight and strength
- Reduce the risk of malnutrition or dehydration
- Prepare for surgery
- Recover from surgery more quickly
- Address barriers to proper nutrition
- Cope with cancer or treatment side effects, such as loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, taste changes, and chewing or swallowing difficulties.
Our dietitians meet patients at our Linden Oaks, Unity Hospital, or Rochester General Hospital locations, often by joining an existing appointment. Patients can also come to our nutrition consultation rooms or consult by phone.
Palliative care is an important part of Lipson Cancer Institute’s holistic approach to cancer treatment.
Our palliative care team supports the medical, social, and emotional needs of patients, their families, and caregivers. In collaboration with your cancer care team, our palliative care specialists help with:
- Difficult to manage symptoms
- Advance care planning
- Decisions about transitions in care
- Education about illness and treatment options

Lipson Cancer Institute provides specialty-trained social workers at most of our locations who can provide advocacy, education, resources and compassion to help you and your family cope with cancer.
Social work services may include:
- Support around adjustment to your diagnosis
- Help with communication between you and your medical team
- Mental health recommendations and referrals
- Information and referrals for community-based services and support groups
- Grief and loss support
- Support for you, your caregivers and family
- Help mediating family conflict related to illness
- Help with transportation and lodging or housing
- Help with advance directives and end-of-life issues
- Help with home healthcare services
- Information and referrals for financial and insurance concerns
Our social workers are available at Rochester General Hospital, Unity Hospital, Linden Oaks, St. Mary's, Clifton Springs, and United Memorial Medical Center.
At Lipson Cancer Institute, we’re dedicated to supporting our patients every step of the way – even after your cancer treatment has ended.
Our survivorship program will help you:
- Develop your survivorship care plan, which outlines your unique follow-up, screenings and exams, and serves as a resource for your other non-oncology providers
- Cope with long-term physical and emotional effects from treatment
- Manage your risk for recurrence
- Develop healthy living practices
- Address social and financial concerns
- Find support and community resources
- Improve your quality of life
The physicians and nurses at Lipson Cancer Institute are experts in survivorship, and will work with you and your primary care physician to create a plan for living well beyond cancer.
Financial counseling is available to help you and your family navigate the financial component of getting care at Lipson Cancer Institute. Our financial counselors are dedicated to serving as a resource to you by:
- Explaining your insurance coverage and benefits
- Estimating your financial responsibility for services not covered by insurance
- Identifying possible ways for you to pay for your care if you do not have adequate funds or health insurance
- Helping you identify and obtain coverage for government programs, where available
- Addressing questions or concerns regarding your insurance coverage and financial assistance
Rochester Regional Health has a variety of financial assistance options available to our patients who are uninsured or underinsured. Our financial counselors will assist you in determining if you qualify for financial assistance or if there are programs available that may help pay for your medical services.
Lipson Cancer Institute’s outpatient pharmacy provides you with convenient access to cancer prescription medications and supplies that are crucial to your treatment.
Our specialty-trained pharmacists serve as a dedicated resource to help:
- Evaluate and coordinate medications with your oncology care team
- Provide counseling on medications, their usage and side effects
- Manage medication side effects and prevent unintended drug interactions
- Assist with medication costs through collaboration with social workers, care coordinators, and other health care professionals
- Contact your insurance company to determine prior authorization requirements and co-pay responsibilities
- Ensure your medication renewals are refilled upon consultation and approval by your physician

Preparing For Your First Appointment
As a new patient at Lipson Cancer Institute, we want you to feel comfortable, cared for, and informed. Our goal is to provide you with the most comprehensive cancer care and help guide you through the entire process.
Your first appointment will be comprehensive, so you should plan to spend an hour or two with us. Please arrive 30 minutes before your appointment to complete a few new patient forms.
What To Bring
- ID and insurance cards
- Your medical history -You will want to be sure that your oncologist has your complete medical history. This includes but is not limited to:
- Your symptoms and what made you go to your doctor in the first place
- Results from tests that your doctor ordered, including lab reports
- Copies of scans, x-rays, MRIs, CTs, or other imaging tests that were done
- Pathology slides if a biopsy was performed
- Any specialists that you have seen
- Whether you have previously been treated for cancer
- Names and phone numbers of all providers
- List of medications - Please bring a list of all prescription and over-the-counter medications you are taking along with the dosage. This should include any dietary supplements (vitamins, herbs, etc.) and pain relievers (Advil, Tylenol, etc.). Please let your oncology care team know if you are allergic to any medications.
- A notebook and a pen - We encourage you to take notes and write down your questions during your appointment.
- A family member or a friend - If you can, bring someone with you to be another set of ears in the room. In addition to providing emotional support, they can help you remember what the doctor says, take notes for you, and remind you of key questions that you don’t want to forget to ask.
- A list of questions you would like to ask the doctor - There are no silly questions, especially when it comes to understanding your cancer diagnosis and treatment plan. If you’re not sure about something, just ask. Here are some things that are helpful to discuss during your first appointment:
- What is my diagnosis and how soon do I need to start therapy?
- What are my treatment options, what’s involved, and how long will each treatment take?
- What are the benefits of the recommended treatment?
- What are its potential risks and side effects?
- Should I consider participating in a clinical trial?
- How will treatment affect my daily routine? Can I continue to work through treatment?
- Will treatment impact my fertility? If so, is there anything I can do to protect my ability to have children in the future?
- What should I do if I develop new symptoms after I begin treatment?
- What support resources are available to help me cope with my diagnosis?
- Whom should I call if I have additional questions after I leave the office?
