Is Outpatient Detox Right for Me?

Alcohol Detoxification

We are proud to have helped hundreds of people in the Rochester area safely detoxify by reducing the effects of alcohol withdrawal. While our personalized detoxification program is appropriate for many people, it is not right for everyone.

Schedule an evaluation

Our medically supervised program lasts seven to ten days, with daily appointments lasting about one hour. Typically, you can be seen for an initial evaluation within two days. Our supportive environment is ideal for people who are living in a stable environment and have reliable phone service and transportation. You will not be able to drive while taking detoxification medications and must arrange private or public transportation.

Successful outpatient detoxification–commonly called ambulatory or rapid detoxification–usually involves treatments with  and phenobarbital for alcohol dependence, along with addiction outpatient treatment.

Alcohol Withdrawal

Alcohol withdrawal symptoms usually occur within 5-10 hours after your last drink but can occur days later. Some people experience symptoms that worsen in 48-72 hours, and their symptoms may persist for weeks.

Common alcohol withdrawal symptoms include:

  • Depression
  • Fatigue
  • Irritability
  • Jumpiness
  • Mood swings
  • Nightmares
  • Shakiness

A severe form of alcohol withdrawal called delirium tremens can cause:

  • Agitation
  • Severe confusion
  • Hallucinations
  • Fever
  • Seizures

It can also cause clammy skin, headache, insomnia, a loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, a rapid heart rate, sweating, and tremors throughout your body.

Alcohol withdrawal is a severe condition that may rapidly become life-threatening. Call 911 or go to the emergency room if you think you may be in alcohol withdrawal, especially if you were using alcohol often and recently stopped.
