Our inpatient diagnostic, therapeutic and rehabilitative services include:

Brain Injury Rehabilitation

Patients who have suffered a traumatic or acquired brain injury may experience trouble with language and thinking skills, swallowing, movement, balance, behavior, getting in and out of bed, and other daily living skills.

Our focus is on determining the impact of brain injury on a person’s function and independence, including mobility, cognition, behavior and wellness, and developing a personalized therapy program to help them achieve the best outcome.

We treat patients with brain injuries due to:

  • Cerebral hemorrhage
  • Infection
  • Oxygen deprivation (anoxia or hypoxia)
  • Trauma
  • Tumors

As a first step toward treatment, our highly skilled interdisciplinary team evaluates each patient, thoroughly assessing their physical, cognitive and behavioral functions, focusing on areas such as attention, concentration, memory, problem solving, judgment, emotional functioning, and social skills. From there, a personalized and comprehensive treatment plan will be developed to address each patient’s specific challenges.

Comprehensive Medical Rehabilitation

A serious medical condition can rob the body of strength and endurance. The path to recovery often involves rehabilitation to help patients move beyond their physical weakness.

Our expert team coordinates care with our specially trained therapy staff to ensure a comprehensive and personalized return to health and function. We often see patients with:

  • Orthopaedic conditions - Patients who have fractures, joint replacements or spine surgeries may have pain, weakness, difficulty moving in bed, walking and completing daily living skills. Our team works with patients to improve comfort, strength, mobility and function.
  • Spinal cord injuries - Patients who have suffered a spinal cord injury may have decreased feeling and movement below the level of injury to the cord. The loss may be partial or complete and is dependent on the extent and location of the injury. Patients work with our team to gain strength and function where possible and to learn how to compensate or move in new ways, when necessary.
  • Limb loss - Patients with an amputation or limb loss experience challenges after surgery. They may have difficulty getting in and out of bed, walking, balancing, dressing, bathing and other daily living skills. They may also experience phantom sensations or pain. Therapy can help them regain the ability to walk, move, and manage daily living activities. The team also provides education about care of the residual limb and offers emotional support. When appropriate the team consults with a prosthetist to initiate the process of getting a prosthesis (artificial limb).
  • Neurologic conditions - The right kind of therapy can address many areas of difficulty and help patients understand their new normal. Our professionals provide treatment for all types of neurologic conditions, including but not limited to: Multiple Sclerosis (MS), Parkinson’s Disease, Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS), Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), Cerebral Palsy (CP), Myelopathy, Encephalopathy, and tumors.
  • Heart failure/ventricular assistive devices – Patients who have undergone treatment for heart failure or the implantation of a ventricular assistive device have to learn medical management and lifestyle modifications to ensure a long, healthy life. Our team helps to create a personalized exercise program focused on building stamina and endurance to strengthen the heart muscle, and coach’s patients on lifestyle changes such as diet, and stress management to reduce the risk of future cardiac events.

  • Pediatric Rehabilitation

Like any parent, you want the very best for your child. We share your concerns, as much as we share your joy and satisfaction when your child reaches each milestone on the journey to recovery. We are with you every step of the way.

Our experienced pediatric rehabilitation team is specially trained in caring for pediatric and adolescent patients and provides both consultation and treatment for children with a wide range of neurological and orthopaedic conditions. In a safe, comfortable, family-friendly environment designed with children in mind, we provide the emotional and physical support young patients need as they face the challenges of rehabilitation, as well as education and family support services for their parents and caregivers.

Your child’s physicians, neuropsychologists, and the entire therapeutic team will work closely with your family and pediatrician to coordinate the specific services your child needs. Family and caregiver participation is highly encouraged and we welcome families to stay overnight in our private patient rooms or at the nearby Ronald McDonald House. Additionally, our team will not only work with school districts to provide education and information regarding recommended accommodations, but can also attend CSE meetings to help facilitate your child’s individual education plan.

Even after your child has been discharged, we can continue to work with the school or other therapy providers to assist with your child’s education. Our goal is to ensure that each and every child has the services they need to function to the best of their abilities at home, in school, and in the community.
