What is Focal One HIFU?

Focal One HIFU is a medical procedure that uses higher intensity ultrasound waves targeted directly at the prostate to accurately destroy the diseased tissue.

The highly focused energy from the ultrasound causes the temperature of the tissue to rise, and the heat destroys the targeted tissue area. The ultrasound beams can pass through layers of healthy tissue, leaving them unharmed until they reach their target.

Who can be treated with Focal One HIFU?

Patients with early-stage prostate cancer that has not spread beyond the prostate are the best candidates for Focal One HIFU treatment. Focal One HIFU can be used to treat a single tumor or part of a large tumor, as visible on an MRI or ultrasound.

Focal One HIFU may also be an effective therapy for recurrent prostate cancer when patient may not have any other treatment options available. Your urologist will discuss the benefits and risks of Focal One HIFU, and whether this treatment option is right for you.

What are the advantages of Focal One HIFU?

The advantages of a high-intensity focused ultrasound include:

  • Outpatient procedure (you're able to go home the same day)
  • One treatment
  • No surgical incisions
  • No radiation
  • No damage to surrounding healthy tissues or organs
  • Low risk of side effects such as erectile dysfunction and incontinence
  • Quick recovery and return to normal activity within a few days

How long does the procedure take?

HIFU is an outpatient procedure that typically takes between one and four hours to perform, depending on each patient's specific circumstances.
