Rochester Regional Health provides COVID-19 PCR testing throughout the communities we serve.
Getting tested for COVID-19 is the only way to confirm whether you are infected with the coronavirus.
By getting tested when you have an upcoming procedure, as part of work or school guidelines, if you’ve had an exposure or if you are experiencing symptoms, you can help to limit the spread of the virus in our community – keeping us all healthier and safer.
Below are quick guidelines on the types of COVID-19 testing options provided by Rochester Regional Health, where to go depending on your situation and how to find a location nearest you. For additional testing sites in your area, use the NYS Department of Health test site finder.
As of January 15, 2022, insurance companies in the U.S. are required to reimburse members for the purchase of over-the-counter at-home COVID-19 rapid testing kits.
The reimbursement process varies based on the insurance plan. Some require members to submit a request for reimbursement and show proof of purchase. Other plans require a prescription from a provider.
If you are looking to obtain reimbursement, you should contact your insurer for more detailed information on their guidelines. If your plan does require a prescription for reimbursement, you should also contact your provider’s office for guidance.
These tests are less sensitive than PCR tests but have a quicker turnaround – within 15 minutes in some cases. Rapid molecular tests (e.g., Abbott ID NOW) are significantly better than rapid antigen tests (e.g., Binax NOW). Rapid molecular tests may be accepted for return to school testing; rapid antigen tests are currently not accepted.
Rapid antigen tests are available at most local pharmacies, both for on-site testing and for over-the-counter purchase. Community clinics, and state and local health department testing sites also offer rapid testing at no cost.
The gold standard and most sensitive COVID-19 test, most PCR tests are performed in a laboratory. Pharmacies and local public health departments are often available for PCR testing. At Rochester Regional Health, the turnaround time from sample collection to results is typically between 24-48 hours. Some providers' offices also offer in-office rapid PCR testing.
