Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteers participate in our healing mission in many and varied ways. The volunteer assignments and programs listed below are our current priorities and the greatest areas of need.

Visitor and Patient Support Roles

Visitor (Guest) Services

  • Greet and welcome those entering the hospital lobby
  • Provide walking and wheelchair assistance throughout the hospital

Volunteer shifts: Mon – Fri, 8:00 am – 12:00 pm and 12:00 – 4:00 pm
Once a new volunteer begins, she/he is assigned to orient and train with one of our experienced volunteers.

Patient Discharge

  • Answer the discharge desk phone
  • Complete patient transport tickets
  • Wheelchair assist patients from patient room to the patient’s pick-up vehicle

Volunteer shifts: Mon – Fri, 9:00 am – 1:00 pm, 12:00 – 4:00 pm
Once a new volunteer begins, she/he is assigned to orient and train with one of our experienced volunteers.

Way-Finding Podium

  • Be a friendly, warm, and smiling presence
  • Answer questions and provide directions
  • Guide people to elevators and other key locations

Volunteer shifts: Mon - Fri, 8:00 am - 12:00 pm and 12:00 pm - 4:00 pm
Once a new volunteer begins, she/he is assigned to orient and train with one of our experienced volunteers.

Patient Comfort Support Volunteer Roles

Emergency Department Patient – Family Companion

Must be at least 18 years of age

  • Check-in on patients to offer smiles, a listening ear, blankets, pillows, and encouragement
  • Answer call lights to determine the patient’s needs (Almost 50% of the time, patient needs are non-medical and can be met by volunteers.)
  • Offer food and drink, information, support and updates to family members of patients
  • Restock supplies, deliver specimens, run errands, etc.

Volunteer shifts: Daily, 10:00 am – 2:00 pm, 2:00 – 6:00 pm, and 5:00 – 9:00 pm 
Once a new volunteer begins, she/he is assigned to orient and train with one of our experienced volunteers.

Cancer Center Compassionate Companion

Must be at least 18 years of age

  • Socialize with and keep patients and families company during infusion sessions
  • Pass snacks, beverages, and meals
  • Restock supplies, deliver specimens, run errands, etc.
  • Escort and wheelchair assist patients and/or families around the hospital 

Volunteer shifts: Mon – Fri, 8:00 am – 12:00 pm and 12:00 – 4:00 pm 
Once a new volunteer begins, she/he is assigned to orient and train with one of our experienced volunteers.

Family Support Volunteer Roles

CTICU Family Lounge Liaison

Must be at least 18 years of age

  • Greet family members and visitors
  • Provide information and updates to family members in the family lounge
  • Check on the families and their comfort-needs as they wait in the lounge
  • Escort family into the ICU to the patient's bed 
  • Act as a liaison between the family waiting in the lounge and the medical staff in the unit

Volunteer shifts: Mon – Fri, 8:00 am – 12:00 pm and 12:00 – 4:00 pm 
Once a new volunteer begins, she/he is assigned to orient and train with one of our experienced volunteers.

Surgical Family Lounge Advocate

Must be at least 18 years of age

  • "Round on families in the lounge
  • Ensure families are checked in and receive timely and proper updates during and after their loved one's surgery
  • Attend to the comfort needs of family members during their wait
  • Escort or give wheelchair assistance to family members going up to the recovery areas

Volunteer shifts: Mon – Fri, 9:00 am – 1:00 pm and 1:00 – 5:00 pm 
Once a new volunteer begins, she/he is assigned to orient and train with one of our experienced volunteers.
