Concussion Program

Concussions can happen to anyone, anywhere — on the road, on the job, at home or on the athletic field. A concussion is a traumatic brain injury. It doesn’t matter if you’re an athlete or not – if untreated, a concussion can result in serious, prolonged symptoms.  Recovery is linked to early evaluation and treatment.

Rochester Regional Health’s Concussion Program includes experts in neurology, neurosurgery, neuropsychology, sports medicine, physical medicine and rehabilitation, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, vestibular (balance) therapy and imaging. We manage all aspects of recovery from a concussion and customize a care plan to your needs so you can recover as completely, quickly and safely as possible.

Diagnosing and Treating Your Concussion

Common symptoms of a concussion can begin immediately or after a few days. A formal diagnosis requires a visit to an expert in concussion management. Depending on your symptoms (LINK TO WHAT IS A CONCUSSION), your concussion evaluation may include:

  • Examination by a physician specializing in concussion care
  • Balance assessment/treatment
  • Neuropsychological evaluation

Our physicians will then develop a care plan customized to you, including:

  • Activity modifications (a return-to-work, return-to-play or return-to-learn protocol)
  • Concussion education
  • Vestibular (balance), therapy
  • Neuropsychological assessment and feedback
  • Pharmacological treatment
  • Multiple concussion management
  • Referral to other Rochester Regional Health specialists
  • Concussion prevention
  • Communication with work, school, coaches

Our team will schedule follow up appointments based on your physician-guided plan.
