What is HFpEF?
HFpEF occurs when the heart muscle squeezes normally, but is stiff. A stiff heart does not relax well, so the heart cannot properly fill with blood during the resting period between each beat. Therefore, fluid can get backed up into the lungs, stomach, and legs and the heart may not deliver enough blood to the rest of the body to meet the body’s nutrition and oxygen needs.
This can cause:
- Shortness of breath
- Chest discomfort
- Coughing
- Swelling in the legs or belly
- Nausea or low appetite
- Fatigue
- Trouble exercising or doing daily tasks
HFpEF is more common in people over 60, especially women, and those with high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, sleep apnea, kidney disease, atrial fibrillation, and coronary artery disease. It can be hard to spot, but our team knows what to look for.
