Rochester, NY - Rochester General Hospital (RGH) has achieved Magnet recognition for the fifth time, reaffirming its nursing professionalism, collaboration, and exceptional patient care. The American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Magnet Recognition Program® distinguishes healthcare organizations that meet the rigorous standards for nursing excellence. This credential is the highest national honor for the professional nursing practice.
This accomplishment places RGH among an elite group: only 89 hospitals nationwide have achieved five Magnet designations out of more than 600 Magnet-recognized organizations. RGH’s Emergency Department and patient experience metrics were specifically noted for outperforming national benchmarks.
“Magnet recognition is a tremendous honor and reflects our commitment to delivering the highest quality of care to this community,” said Shari McDonald, Rochester General Hospital Chief Nursing Officer. “Earning this designation once is remarkable—achieving it five times speaks volumes about the dedication and excellence of our nurses and entire team.”
Research demonstrates that Magnet recognition provides specific benefits to health care organizations and their communities, such as:
- Higher patient satisfaction with nurse communication, availability of help and receipt of discharge information.
- Lower risk of 30-day mortality and lower failure to rescue rates.
- Higher job satisfaction among nurses.
- Lower nurse reports of intentions to leave their positions.
Magnet recognition is the gold standard in nursing excellence and a factor when the public judges health care organizations. U.S. News & World Report’s annual showcase of “America’s Best Hospitals” includes Magnet recognition in its ranking criteria for quality of inpatient care.
The Magnet Model evaluates nursing excellence across key components, including transformational leadership, structural empowerment, exemplary professional practice, innovation, and measurable outcomes.
Achieving Magnet recognition requires a rigorous multi-year process involving extensive documentation, on-site evaluations, and peer review. Hospitals must reapply every four years, demonstrating sustained excellence and ongoing improvements in patient care.
“We’re a stronger organization today because of the foundation laid with our first Magnet designation,” said Tammy Snyder, Rochester General Hospital President. “This recognition reaffirms what we know to be true—nursing excellence lives here at RGH. While we take this moment to celebrate, we’re also focused on the future, continuing to raise the bar and care like family.”
