BATAVIA, NY — Rochester Regional Health is proud to announce that United Memorial Medical Center (UMMC) has been recognized for excellence in lactation care by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE) and the International Lactation Consultant Association (ILCA).
UMMC received the prestigious International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) Care Award in recognition of its commitment to delivering exceptional lactation support through professionals certified as IBCLCs. The designation highlights the hospital’s ongoing efforts to protect, promote, and support breastfeeding by providing comprehensive education, resources, and compassionate, patient-centered care for families. The IBCLC Care Award recognizes facilities that demonstrate excellence in lactation care and a strong commitment to improving maternal and infant health outcomes through evidence-based practices and certified lactation expertise.
“Supporting mothers and families through every stage of their journey is an important part of the compassionate care we provide at Rochester Regional Health,” said Marcy Mulconry, MD, Executive Medical Director, Chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology for RRH. “This recognition reflects the dedication of our maternity and lactation teams at UMMC to ensuring families have access to expert guidance, education, and support during some of life’s most important moments.”
“IBCLCs bring skilled, compassionate care to families during some of their most vulnerable moments,” said Neelam Jawad, MBBS, MCPS, IBCLC, Chair of the Board of Directors of IBLCE. “They provide more than clinical support — they offer reassurance, confidence, and compassion when it matters most. We proudly recognize and deeply appreciate the CARE Award recipients for the heartfelt difference they make every day.”
IBCLCs focus on preventive care and provide support throughout pregnancy and after birth to help families successfully initiate and continue breastfeeding. They assist with overcoming breastfeeding challenges, caring for premature or sick infants, returning to work or school while breastfeeding, and educating clinical staff on best practices in lactation support.
“I’m incredibly proud of our whole team and all the work that goes into supporting our new families, however they choose to feed their infants,” said Olivia Barren, Nurse Manager of the Labor and Delivery Unit at UMMC. “This award spotlights our IBCLC, Shawna Radder, who delivers hands-on support for our new families, consults when needed before delivery, provides education, and co-leads our Baby Friendly Task Force focused on maintaining our high standards as a Baby Friendly Hospital.”
UMMC also continues to support local families through its Healthy Living Team, which offers prenatal classes, Baby Café, and ongoing postpartum support services led by IBCLCs. Through these efforts, the community hospital remains committed to delivering family-focused care and ensuring breastfeeding families have access to the support and resources they need.
