What is Thoracic Surgery?

Thoracic surgeons are responsible for taking care of everything in your chest that is not directly related to the heart. That includes your airway, lungs, esophagus (called the foregut), pleural space, and chest wall. From lung nodules to swallowing issues and all the thoracic and esophageal conditions imaginable, our board-certified, fellowship-trained thoracic surgeons have you covered.

Conditions We Treat

Our expert providers have years of experience treating a wide variety of thoracic conditions, including benign and malignant:

  • Diseases of the Lungs
  • Diseases of the Pleura

  • Diseases of the Diaphragm
  • Diseases of the Chest Wall
  • Mediastinal Diseases such as the thymus and mediastinal masses

We make every effort to see you as quickly as possible, and our thoracic surgeons will be the ones doing your pre-surgery workups, allowing us to care for you from symptom to resolution. We also offer telemedicine visits as an option.

Why Rochester Regional Health?

At Rochester Regional Health’s Thoracic Surgery Program, we want our patients to know what will occur every single step of the way–from diagnosis to your individualized treatment plan. We establish and foster personal, collaborative relationships so we can get to know you and your needs. At your first appointment, you’ll meet directly with your surgeon, where they will get to know you and your goals, allowing them to develop an individualized treatment plan. They’ll walk you through your options and help you decide the best path forward.

Our program prioritizes seeing patients quickly–within 24 hours for emergent cases and one week for non-urgent thoracic disorders. And, if you do not live in or around Rochester, we can schedule telemedicine visits, which allow us to start the thoracic surgery process without you leaving the comfort of your home.

Working collaboratively with colleagues who specialize in pulmonology, gastroenterology, and oncology, our program provides the most comprehensive thoracic care possible.

Lung Cancer is the Leading Cause of Cancer Deaths in the U.S.

Luckily, we can typically treat lung cancer if we find it early. Using a low-dose chest CT scan, we’ll quickly, painlessly, and non-invasively screen you for lung cancer.
